Don’t Be Irate About How I Rate

Welcome back!

If you look into the numbers on my top 100 posts, you might notice that the ratings I give games don’t really correlate to where they are on my list. There are a few reasons for that.

The first reason why they don’t stack up is that I didn’t make this list from my Board Game Geek collection. I suppose I could have listed my collection by score and then copied them over, ranking games that have the same score based on something else. But that doesn’t sound fun to me.

The second reason my games don’t look like an orderly list from 10s on down is that I rate games on how much I like them, but when I ranked them I often account for several factors, such as:

  • How easy are they to teach?
  • How accessible is the theme?
  • How much do my friends like to play it?
  • How long is it?
  • How much do I want to play it right now?

So you can see why they might not add up. In fact, my #2 game is rated a 10, and my #1 game is rated a 9.5. Yeah, bonkers, I know, but it’s just the way things rate around here.

Anywho, there’s that sorted. The top 100 list will most likely be interspersed with other posts. I think that’s the way I’d like to do it. When they’re all up, I’ll link them together or make a sidebar or something. But until then, what’s your board game ranking system look like? Do you keep it scientific? Do you let it fly loose? Let me know below!
